Ghanaian second-tier club Accra Lions have gained promotion to the Ghana Premier League following the latest ruling by the Appeals Committee of the Ghana FA.
The Accra-based side will finish top of the Zone III league regardless of the outcome of the matchday 30 clash involving second-placed Tema Youth and Uncle United FC.
Lions have no match left in the season.
Lions, 62 points, are better in terms of head to head reference against second-placed Tema Youth who could their final matchday clash at the Tema Sports Stadium to go on points terms. However Lions have superior head to head as they beat Tema Youth 2-0 at the Tema Sports Stadium having drawn 2-2 in the first round tie at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Controversy broke out in the league last week as Lions declared themselves as champions in Zone III after they defeated Danbort FC 3-1. Tema Youth contested the declaration on the grounds of the appeal case which had been filed by Phar Rangers against the decision of the Disciplinary Committee with specific reference to article 13 (5) of the Division One League regulations.
Youth were hoping the Appeals Committee would take a cue from their earlier decision regarding the case involving Amidaus Professionals which overturned the decision of the DC to award points instead of deducting points from club.
Lions had benefited 6 points from Phar Rangers and Tema Youth were hoping for a favourable verdict which could have seen 6 points deducted from the accumulated points for Lions but the appeals committee failed to set aside the DC’s decision.
Below the reason.
