English giants Chelsea have confirmed the departure of Wales international of Ghanaian descent Ethan Ampadu to Italian Serie A side Venezia.
The 20-year-old has joined the newly promoted Serie A side on a season-long commitment, and has also signed a new three-year contract with Chelsea through 2024.
Of course, Ampadu will be Venice for much more than just to enjoy the scenery. Similarly to his spell at Sheffield United last season, Venezia are expected to battling all season to avoid relegation. They’ve already lost their first two games of the season, without scoring a single goal in fact, but hopefully Ampadu can help make a difference for them in the long run.
Ampadu’s departure was enabled by the impending arrival of Saúl Ñíguez, who’s set to join Chelsea on loan. Next summer, we’ll get to revisit both of their situations then. Seeing as how this is his third (top flight) loan now, hopefully Ampadu gets a proper shot at the first-team next season.
