An Executive Member of the Tema East Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Stephen Ashitey Adjei, has declared Tema off-limits to former President John Mahama’s ongoing thank you tour of the country.
In a write-up, Mr. Ashitey Adjei, who is popularly called Moshake, warns that public disenchantment with the former President within Tema as a whole and the NDC, in particular, is so high that things might get confrontational if Mr. Mahama extends his thank-you tour to the harbour city.
“Day in day out, the many jobless youths especially those in the NDC remember their predicament is due to the neglect they suffered under Mahama; they feel that their sacrifices for the party and Mahama’s presidency only made them enemies from the current government. Meanwhile, when he was President, Mahama ignored them and did not empower them,” Ashitey Adjei wrote.
He adds, “The contrast that President Akufo-Addo has been in terms of the welfare of his party members has really worsened the annoyance of the members of the NDC in Tema here which probably suffered the worst neglect under Mahama.”
The write-up is captioned; “Advising Mahama From Inside Tema.” It warns that “People are still suffering from the consequences of the many sins of Mahama against the people of Tema.”
Among these sins, he lists the former President’s neglect of victims of a gas explosion in 2010 when Mahama was in power. “People still remember how Mahama did not come to their aid,” he writes.
Moshake adds, “and as for the ex-workers of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) who were ignored when they wrote several times to Mr. Mahama asking him to implement former President Mills’ fiat for them to be paid, Mr. Mahama ought to know that he has no friends among them.”
The plain-talking NDC firebrand lamented that most of the executives of the NDC in Tema are jobless and poor because of the neglect that they suffered when Mahama was President.
He points out that even though the Tema Port expansion project was initiated by the Mahama government, many of the NDC youth in Tema who desired for jobs thrown up by the project were ignored. “And now, we see every day, how the Akufo-Addo government has used this same project to provide jobs for the youth of the NPP in Tema. The whole thing is like NDC youth are monkeys and the NPP youth are the baboons in a ‘monkey dey work, baboon dey chop’ arrangement,” Moshake lamented.
Politically, he added that President Akufo-Addo is now perceived by many as a more caring President towards Tema because the current President has blessed the harbour city with at least three Ministerial appointments.
“Under Akufo-Addo, a son of Tema, Ishmael Ashitey was the Greater Accra Regional Minister. We have also had Carlos Ahenkorah and Titus Glover as Deputy Ministers for Trade and Transport respectively. You may think these are trivial, but to the Tema people, this is important.
“The grounds in Tema are not good for Mr. Mahama and I will urge him to keep his thank-you tour away from here. He can come and levitate with his helicopter or plane in the air, but he should not land or he can ride his speed boat through the sea to Ada like he has been doing on vacations, but he should not near our beaches. He is simply not welcome here.” Ashitey Adjei concluded.
