Ghana captain Andre Ayew has rejected suggestions the Black Stars failed to impress against minnow Ethiopia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Friday night.

Ghana’s Black Stars laboured to a slim 1-0 win over Ethiopia’s Walia Ibex after Wakaso Mubarak profited from a goalkeeping hawler by Teklemariam Shanko at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium. The China-based midfielder unleashed a ferocious drive from 25 yards but the ball was dipping as it got closer to the Ethiopia Bunna glovesman however he failed to prevent the ball from passing in between his legs.

The goal separated the two sides and the Black Stars were lucky to escape with the maximum points as Abubeker Nasir Ahmed powered a shot at goal but was curtailed by Richard Ofori and subsequently cleared by Daniel Amartey.

Ethiopia recorded 51 per cent ball possession against Ghana’s 49 in a game the East Africans pulled a big surprise on the Ghanaians with a refined second-half performance.

In the post match interview captain Andre Ayew told reporters the Black Stars are happy about the fact that they won the 3 points at stake.

“What do you mean by a performance like this? Well I think if you look at the results of all the other teams in other groups you will not say what you’re saying. Go and check. What I just want to say is that we are happy at the three points, everyone is happy. And I will keep saying if you want anybody can watch the game again. They did not shoot at goal. They were possessing the ball in their half. We played with our experience and our brain. How did we score? We were not going to press them crazily. How did Jordan take balls and go forward?,” he said.

The former West Ham United player lasted the entire period of the game for the Black Stars.
