Ghana league cannot attract any top Brazilian striker – Kotoko Barreto tells Nhyira FM

Asante Kotoko coach Mariano Barreto has taken a swipe at the Ghana Premier League by insisting that no top Brazilian striker will want to play in the Ghanaian top-flight league.

Kotoko signed 28-year-old Brazilian forward on free transfer to replace Kwame Opoku who joined Algerian side USM Alger in the course of the season.

Barreto, 2004 Ghana men’s soccer team coach for the Olympic Games in Athens, claims he was surprised when he was told that the Porcupine Warriors had acquired a top Brazilian striker to replace Opoku.

Players from Ghana want to go to Europe, players from Brazil also want to go to Europe. Mostly for Money,” he told Nhyira FM in an interview

“So I was surprised to hear that a top striker from Brazil is coming to replace Kwame Poku at Kotoko.”

“When they (Kotoko) told me a top Brazilian striker is to replace Kwame Opoku, I was surprised. Because why could a top striker in Brazil come to Ghana?”

His comments about the destination of Brazilian players and the value of the Ghana Premier League could also mean that midfielder Fabio Gama is not a top quality midfielder.

He also claims Kotoko is a club with a big name but not as big as it may appear outside to people.
