With the weekend approaching Ghanaian players are expected to motor into action for their clubs ahead of the international break.
Your trusted source on Ghanaian players abroad – Ghana Sports Online, has outlined the top 10 Ghanaian players you are to follow either online or via paid TV.
Below are the players and the games they are expected to feature in.
Mohammed Baba Iddrisu – Real Mallorca vs Espanyol (LA LIGA)
The 25-year-old Ghana international is expected to start in midfield for Los Piratas at the Visit Mallorca Estadi in Palma de Mallorca when they lost Espanyol in the Spanish La Liga on Friday evening. Iddrisu, an integral member of C.K Akonnor’s midfield, has started both of Mallorca’s opening games of the season clocking 160 minutes. Manager Luis Garcia is expected to deploy the former Leganés U19 player in his central midfield which would act as the pivot for Japanese offensive midfielder Takefusa Kubo to operate on. Mallorca have picked up four points from their first two matches of the season to sit fifth in the table, while Espanyol have opened their campaign with draws against Osasuna and Villarreal.
Mohammed Salisu – Newcastle United vs Southampton (ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE)
Salisu scored high marks against Manchester United last weekend and an equally brilliant performance is expected from the former Real Valladolid man when the Saints visit Newcastle United at the St. James’ Park. The 22-year-old played part of last season as a full-back but has now been restored into central defensive role by manager Raph Hasenhuttl. The Austrian rested the Kumasi-born defender during their midweek 8-0 whitewashing of Newport in the EFL Cup. Both Newcastle United and Southampton are winless after 2 games in the season and they will thread cautiously in order not to taste defeat. With Newcastle losing both of their opening games (2-0 against Aston Villa, 4-2 to West Ham Utd) Steven Bruce will encourage his men to halt the slide with victory over Southampton but Salisu and his compatriots in defence might have other ideas.
Gideon Mensah – OGC Nice vs Bordeaux (LIGUE 1)
The RB Salzburg loanee has walked straight into the Bordeaux starting XI after arriving just a couple of weeks ago, playing alongside France-born Ghanaian defender Enock Kwateng in a 5-back system favoured by Swiss gaffer Vladimir Petkovic. Bordeaux are winless after matchday 3, losing 1 and drawing 2 but with a visit to Nice staring them in the face on Saturday Mensah and his Les Girondins teammates know they must win to avert the dangers of dropping into the relegation zone. OGC Nice had their game against Olympique Marseille abandoned after crowd violence and with possible points deductions staring them in the eyes they will remain determined to atone for any possible losses by making a meal of Bordeaux and Mensah will play a huge part if they are to avoid defeat. Scheduled – 15:00 GMT, Saturday.
Emmanuel Gyasi – Lazio vs Spezia (SERIE A)
The Black Stars forward was on the score-sheet and lasted the entire period for Spezia on the opening weekend of the Serie A. His 7th minute strike proved significant for the side managed by former Italy international Thiago Motta as Cagliari staged a commanding second-half performance to draw 2-2. After throwing away such a precious lead in the opening game of the season, Gyasi and his Spezia side will very cautious defensively but that will come against a ruthless Lazio side that hammered Empoli 3-1 at their own backyard. The 27-year-old former Torino Primavera player is expected to hold down his place in attack in the game at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Saturday afternoon.
Okyere Kwasi Wriedt – Willem II vs PEC Zwolle (EREDIVISIE)
One of the strikers who should get a look from Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor. The former Bayern Munich II striker scored the opening goal for Willem II when they raided Vitesse Arnhem 3-0 on matchday 2. The 27-year-old will most likely lead the attacking lines for the Super Pitchers when they host PEC Zwolle at the Konig Willem II Stadion. Zwolle have lost both of their opening games of the season, conceding 3 goals and scoring none and their ambition will be to at least grab a point from the away fixture that will see two other Ghanaian players in Derrick Kohn and John Yeboah Zamora likely to make the matchday squad for the hosts.
Kelvin Yeboah – Admira vs Sturm Graz (AUSTRIAN BUNDESLIGA)
Charles Akonnor’s new Black Stars forward has been explosive in attack for Sturm Graz who have climbed to second spot on the Bundesliga table and have won 5 of their last 6 games in all competitions. However if you think the club’s numbers are impressive, you should check out those of the Yeboah who has scored 5 times in his last 5 games and provided 1 assist. With a trip to Admira before the international break where Yeboah will fly to West Africa to join the Ghana squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers the 21-year-old will want to sign out on a good note and the Admira defence that has shipped 6 goals in 5 games will be his target. Scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
Abdul Manaf Nurudeen – KAS Eupen vs Seraing (PRO LEAGUE)
After starting all 5 of Eupen’s league games this season German manager Stefan Kramer will not trade the position of the 22-year-old Aspire Academy product for anything as newly-promoted Seraing visit the Kehrwegstadion. Since making the No.1 choice his own the young glovesman has demonstrated good organisation at the back and displayed awesome agility. The entire Eupen family is thrilled with the Ghana call up for the youngster and manager Kramer will maintain faith in him for the Saturday 16.30GMT kick off game.
Yaw Yeboah – Wisla Krakow vs Legia Warsaw (Polish Ekstraklasa)
After bagging an amazing finish for Wisla in their 3-1 away win over Leczna the former Right to Dream Academy product has attracted massive global attention and Ghanaians have generated interest in him. Legia Warsaw is one of the biggest clubs in Poland and a visit to the Stadion Miejski im. Henryka Reymana in Krakow will be a tantalising clash that will attract a lot of attention with most people itching to see the former Ghana U23 captain in action again. Wisla’s Slokav manager Adrian Gula will build his game around the Ghanaian maestro. Game is slated for Sunday afternoon.
Jonathan Mensah – Columbus Crew vs FC Cincinnati
Jonathan Mensah and his Columbus Crew side are in sorry state after losing all their last 6 games in the league. Any further loss could see them fall further down into the drop zone and the visit of FC Cincinnati will be key litmus test for the entire team led by Mensah who has earned a Black Stars return. Columbus have been a different team in 2021 from the squad that won MLS Cup last season. The talent and quality of the team remains high, but after six consecutive losses, the Crew are in need of a result. Defender Harrison Afful has been a constant bench warmer and the situation might change for him as the Crew might want to mend their defence which has been leaking goals.
Kamaldeen Sulemana – Angers vs Stade de Rennais (LIGUE 1)
The Techiman-born travelled with the Rennais squad to Norway for the UEFA Conference League tie against Rosenborg BK but watched the entire action from the bench as Les Rouge et Noir secured a 3-1 away win. With Jeremy Doku out with a muscle injury the Ghanaian attacking midfielder is expected to start at the Stade Raymond-Kopa when Rennais travel to face Angers on Sunday. Since scoring on his maiden appearance in the top-flight the former Right to Dream Academy player appears to have slowed down a bit and he is expected to motor back into action against Angers.
